The day finally dawned, I guess we thought it was never going to happen, but Michael gave his final performances as Edna in Hairspray last Saturday night.
We made a last-minute decision to go up to London on Friday night and squeeze one extra performance of the show in that night and stay overnight in a hotel so we were about bright and early on Saturday morning. When we arrived at about 11.15 there were already some fans waiting for Michael's arrival. We decided to have some breakfast in the cafe opposite the stage door, and while we were eating Grape Street started filling up. Thankfully, the police came along and closed off the road to traffic (other than Michael's car!) which made it a lot safer for everyone.
Michael arrived at about 1 pm to a tremendous reception from everyone. A film crew were filming for possible inclusion in the extras for Michael's new DVD - hopefully they will have got some great shots of the fans waiting at the stage door.
The matinee was full of fun with various items of Michel Ball merchandise being strategically placed on the set and the performers during the show, as well as lots of little pranks by the case.
The evening performance was absolute perfection and at the end speeches were made and the tears flowed. Afterwards the stage door was swamped and Michael came to one of the windows to thank everyone for their support before they left for a party.
Somehow, I don't think we've seen the last of Michael as Edna........
